Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG) said that an earthquake rocked Tegal and Brebes, Central Java (Central Java) with a magnitude (M) of 4.5. The earthquake damaged several houses in Brebes, Central Java.
It is known that the earthquake occurred on Friday (15/12/2023), at 21.24 WIB. The location of the earthquake was at coordinates 7.15 south latitude and 108.86 east longitude.
“34 km southwest of Tegal Regency. Depth 10 km,” wrote the Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in his statement.
According to Daryono, the earthquake caused damage to several houses.
“The M 4.5 Salem Brebes earthquake that occurred tonight resulted in damage to several houses in the Citimbang Village and Kedumanis Village areas, Salem District, Brebes Regency. This is because the epicenter of the earthquake was in that area,” he said.
To date, only two houses have been recorded as damaged. Relevant parties are still assessing the impact of the earthquake.
“One house was moderately damaged in Kadumanis Village, Salem District, and one house was slightly damaged in Citimbang Village, Salem District. Other places are still being recorded,” he said.
According to Daryono, M 4.5 in Brebes did not suddenly appear. But it started with a small earthquake a few days ago. However, because the strength of the earthquake was small, it was not felt by residents.
“Tonight’s Salem Brebes earthquake was actually preceded by small earthquakes from 12 and 14 December 2023 with magnitudes of M 2.5 and M 2.9 which were not felt by the public. Meanwhile, the earthquake this evening, 15 Dec 2023, had a magnitude of M 4.5 which damaged several houses.
