Earthquake near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey shocks Manhattan and Brooklyn

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 7 kilometers from Whitehouse Station, in New Jersey, the border state of New York, on the other side of the Hudson River.

The slight tremor was felt in numerous neighborhoods in the districts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, causing an avalanche of messages on social networks, since this natural phenomenon does not usually occur often in that region of the United States.

After the movement, hundreds of social media users also published videos of the moments of panic that were experienced both in the skyscrapers and on the streets, as many people evacuated the buildings.

Even the X account (formerly Twitter) of the emblematic Empire State Building reported “I’m fine” after the earthquake.

Authorities urged caution. “We have no information at this time about significant damage (but) we continue to evaluate the situation,” Fabien Levy, spokesman for New York Mayor Eric Adams, wrote in X.

The tremor also took the UN Security Council by surprise, where a session was being held to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The director of Save The Children, Janti Soeripto, who was speaking at the time, interrupted a speech in which he talked about famine and deaths to ask: “Is it an earthquake?”

“You are making the ground shake,” responded the Palestinian ambassador, Riyad Mansour.

The meeting was suspended when phones began ringing and vibrating due to automated emergency alerts sent to UN headquarters.
