Earthquake M 5.4 Jayapura, Cafes Drifting into the Sea to Damaged Mall Buildings

Earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.4 rocked Jayapura City, Papua. A number of buildings were reported damaged and washed into the sea.

“According to the information we received, it is true that several buildings were damaged in Jayapura City. A cafe in Ruko Dok II Jayapura collapsed and washed to the seafront,” said Jayapura City BPBD Head Asep Khalid when asked for confirmation. detikcomThursday (9/2/2023).

Asep said that the Jayapura Mall building was also reported to be damaged. There was even a puff of smoke, but it is not known for certain whether it came from the fire or not.

“Then the Jayapura Mall was damaged and there was a plume of smoke which is not yet known whether it caused a big fire,” he said.

Asep further admitted that he was still collecting data related to the impact of the earthquake that occurred. Officers are currently being deployed to monitor his condition.
