Earthquake in Taiwan: Shocking videos – Buildings tilt, roads shake – 2024-04-04 21:33:57

The residents of Taiwan experienced moments of terror from the 7.4 Richter earthquake that occurred at a depth of only 15.5 km near the eastern coast.

The videos coming from the moment of the tremor are shocking. Buildings have tilted and others are collapsing like paper towers, trapping people in the rubble. On the road, cars and machines shake with great intensity, means of transport “tremble”, while big waves have risen in the sea.

The provisional tally of the earthquake gives 7 dead and 711 injured. The buildings that fell are 26 and the trapped at least 20, with the rescue crews attempting from the first moment to retrieve survivors.

Today’s earthquake is the strongest since 1999, according to the director of the Taipei Seismological Center, Wu Chien-fu. “The earthquake occurred near the coast and at a shallow focal depth. It was felt throughout Taiwan and neighboring areas (…) It is the strongest in 25 years, since the 1999 earthquake,” he said.

The 1999 magnitude 7.6 earthquake killed 2,400 people and destroyed or damaged 50,000 buildings.

The earthquake triggered the issuance of emergency tsunami warnings for Taiwan itself and the Japanese islands of Okinawa Prefecture.

Airport authorities in Naha, Okinawa’s largest city, suspended flights after the tsunami warning.

In Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, a Reuters news agency reporter found that power was cut in parts of the city. According to Taipower, an electricity company, at least 87,000 households are without electricity.
