A magnitude 5 quake that struck Monday night in southwest China left 4 dead and 23 wounded, according to the country’s Seismological Network Center.
The telluric movement in Qiaojia county of Yunnan province occurred at 9:47 p.m. at a depth of 8 kilometers (5 miles), the news agency detailed. AP.
The United States Geological Survey calculated that the quake had a magnitude of 4.5 and a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), while giving slightly different data on the time it occurred and the location of the epicenter. These types of discrepancies are not unusual, given the enormous distances involved, the agency said.

At least one house collapsed and residents said the movement lasted several seconds. Shallow earthquakes tend to cause more damage to buildings and infrastructure.
Earthquakes are frequent in the area, which lies on the eastern slopes of the Tibetan plateau. An earthquake in 1976 with an epicenter in the north-eastern city of Tangshan left at least 250,000 dead.
The worst earthquake in China in recent years occurred in the western mountainous portion of Sichuan province, north of Yunnan, in 2008, killing nearly 90,000 people.

4.1 magnitude quake shakes mine in northern Sweden
Furthermore, also on Monday, but before dawn, an earthquake struck a mine in northern Sweden, and authorities said it was one of the strongest on record in the country. Thirteen people were in the mine at the time, but no one was injured.
The Swedish National Seismic Network said the earthquake was of magnitude 4.1 and occurred shortly after 3:00 a.m. in the city of Kiruna, AP reported.
This is considered the largest and most modern underground iron ore mine in the world. Norwegian seismic matrix NORSAR said the move was linked to ore mining activities.
Fredrik Bjorkenwall, a spokesman for the company that owns the mine, LKAB, told local newspaper Aftonbladet that the water level at the Kiruna mine was rising, but the pumps were working. He said there were 13 people in the mine at the time of the tremor, but no one was injured.
Not only China and Sweden trembled on Monday, as Greece was rocked by a magnitude 5.1 quake. The epicenter of this tremor, 96kms to the Ierapetra SSW, was 10kms deep, as reported by the USGS.
Ierapetra is a town on the southern coast of the Mediterranean island of Crete, the largest and best known of the paradisiacal Greek islands.
