Earthquake hits Zagreb – injured people, damaged landmarks

In Croatia the earth trembled twice within half an hour. Serious damage was done, and there is also talk of a fatality.

According to a media report, at least one person died in an earthquake in Croatia’s capital Zagreb on Sunday. Rescue workers found the body of a 15-year-old boy in the rubble of a house, the state news agency Hina reported, citing the rescue service chief Zarko Rasic.

Two medium-strong earthquake in a sequence of just over half an hour on Sunday morning in the Croatian capital Zagreb caused serious damage. Dozens of people were injured, the news portal “24sata.hr” reported.

According to the media, bricks fell from the roofs, facades cracked, walls collapsed and debris damaged parked cars. The cathedral in the center, the symbol of the city, was also damaged – one of the two spiers fell to the ground from a height of more than 100 meters.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported the strength of the first quake at 6.24 a.m. at 5.3 and that of the second quake at 7.01 a.m. at 5.0. The centers of the two quakes were seven and ten kilometers north of Zagreb.
