Earthquake hits Turkey – Balkans

  • A magnitude 4.9 earthquake was registered early in the eastern Turkish district of Van by the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD).

    According to the website of the government directorate, the earthquake was followed by a dozen aftershocks so far with a magnitude of more than two. The quake was registered at 00.49 local time (23.46 on December 5 Bulgarian time), and its epicenter was in the area of ​​the town of Tushba at a depth of 7.62 km below the earth’s surface.

    Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said on his Twitter account that AFAD and the 112 emergency number had not received any negative consequences of the quake, state-run TRT Haber reported.

    “Our teams continue to investigate on the spot,” Soylu added.

    The governor of Van Mehmet Emin Bilmez also announced that there are no data on damages and victims of the quake at the moment, BTA reported.

    Cracks have formed in some buildings.

    The Minister of Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change Murat Kurum said that teams from the ministry’s district directorate were also sent to the area in the quake to monitor developments closely.

    Meanwhile, seismic activity in the area bordering Iran continues, with an aftershock of 4.9 in the Van area, with eight aftershocks ranging in magnitude between 2-3 and 3.3, according to AFAD.
