The supporter housing during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022 received harsh criticism. Fans paid around 2,000 kroner a night to stay in container-like simple rooms placed in long rows in desert areas around Doha. Accommodation was criticized for being too warm, too simple and too expensive, among other things.
Now the criticized accommodation will be put to good use elsewhere. Reuters writes that Qatar is sending the container-like dwellings to Turkey and Syria where they will become homes for people who have become homeless after the earthquake disaster.
10,000 dwellings to be sent
The news agency writes that a ship with 350 residents left Qatar for Turkey on Sunday and that a total of 10,000 residents are planned to be sent.
“Given the urgent needs in Turkey and Syria, we have taken the decision to ship our accommodation to the region, providing much-needed and immediate support to the people of Turkey and Syria,” a Qatari official said, according to Reuters.
Over 35,000 people have so far been reported dead following last week’s earthquake disaster in southern Turkey and northern Syria, and the death toll is expected to rise further. According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, millions of people have been left homeless after the earthquake.
