Earthquake damages two historic synagogues in Marrakech’s old town

Two synagogues in the old town of Marrakech damaged

Two synagogues in the old town of Marrakech, located in the old Jewish quarter, the mellah, were damaged during the earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday. The Al Fassayn synagogue suffered “significant damage while the Slat al-Azama synagogue was “partially damaged, according to an Israeli rabbi on site, interviewed by the Jerusalem Post. The Slat al-Azama Synagogue, which was founded by Sephardic Jews who fled Spain in 1492, also houses the Jewish Museum and Center. It was notably renovated in the 1950s to include a separate section reserved for women.
