The epicenter was at Anamizu, Ishikawa District. The quake was felt as far as the capital Tokyo, about 280 kilometers away. A tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama.

The Japanese weather agency expects a tsunami of at least five meters high in Noto. A tidal wave of more than one meter high has been reported on the coast of Ishikawa. In the more northern city of Niigata, the largest city on the west coast, there is damage to buildings. No damage was reported to nuclear power plants in the affected region, but the quake caused power outages in tens of thousands of households.
According to the Japan Meteorological Institute, there is a chance of a tidal wave in the western districts of Ikishawa, Niigata and Toyama, among others. People there have to leave the coast and move inland. Authorities have also warned of another earthquake or aftershocks in Ishikawa. There would already have been an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7.
There are currently no reports of casualties.
