Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The world’s geopolitical conditions are currently heating up. Tensions this time involve some of the world’s major powers between the United States (US) and its allies who are dealing with Russia and China.
Recently, tensions have escalated over the dynamics in Ukraine. Russia is reported to have mobilized massive troops near the country because of Kyiv’s intention to become a member of NATO. NATO itself is a military alliance led by the US and Europe which in fact is a rival to Moscow.
On the other hand, Ukraine itself says its submission to NATO is to get help from the defense pact. The goal is to against other separatist forces in the Donbass and Luhansk regions so that they do not escape again like the Crimea region that fell to Russia in 2014.
The heating up of this relationship has also made some analysts say that if this tension becomes a war, it will almost certainly be a third world war. Both the West and Russia both have state-of-the-art nuclear arsenals.
Russian President Vladimir Putin himself has provided scenarios that are lead to this great war. He said war would occur when Ukraine became a member of NATO and the two jointly carried out military operations to retake Crimea into Kyiv hands.
“Imagine that Ukraine is a member of NATO and a military operation (to recapture Crimea) begins,” the Russian leader said. “What, are we going to fight with NATO? Has anyone thought of this? I don’t think so.”
Meanwhile, the US as the leader of NATO and supporter of Ukraine continues to put strong pressure on Russia. The country led by President Joe Biden stressed that it was ready to provide assistance because a potential attack could occur at any time.
“We’re in the window. Any day now, Russia could take military action against Ukraine, or it could be weeks from now,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told Fox News Sunday.
Currently, Washington has also mobilized a lot of weapons and troops near Kyiv’s territory. Not only weapons, economic sanctions are also being prepared to suppress the Red Bear Country.
“I’ll describe it because we’re on the one-yard line. There is a strong bipartisan determination to support Ukraine and punish Russia if it attacks Ukraine,” he said US Senator Bob Menendez, the Democratic chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The US also added that it asked Russia todisbanded the force numbering more than 100 thousand. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that this must be done by Putin in order for the escalation to decrease.
“Mr Putin can also do the right thing. There’s no reason this situation would turn into a conflict. He could choose to de-escalate tensions, order his troops to leave,” Austin said.
