Despite the corona crisis, the global climate protection campaign “Earth Hour” took place on Saturday. It all started with New Zealand, Fiji and Australia, where the lights went out for an hour on famous buildings and in apartments as a sign of the climate. There was also participation in Vienna and the rest of Austria.
With the “Earth Hour”, the environmental protection organization World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) wants to set an example for climate and environmental protection. The darkness is meant to indicate wasted resources and make people think. The lights went out for one hour around the globe at 8.30 p.m. local time. The campaign took place for the first time in Sydney in 2007.

Lights out for the climate: “Earth Hour” despite corona pandemic
Numerous cities around the world took part: In Auckland, New Zealand, the Sky Tower went dark for an hour. In Sydney, the lights went out at the famous Opera House and at the Harbor Bridge. In Germany it remained dark at the Brandenburg Gate or Cologne Cathedral.

Australia’s WWF chief Dermot O “Gorman said that in the Corona crisis, it was more important than ever to stay connected as a community and look for positive ways to contribute. All public events within the campaign were canceled for security reasons to prevent the virus from spreading.

In Austria too, numerous cities and municipalities, sights and companies took part in the campaign. In Vienna, for example, Schönbrunn Palace and the Museumsquartier or the cities of Graz and Salzburg turned off their lights for an hour.

“We have to make Europe and Austria crisis-proof in the long term. Those who invest in protecting the climate and the environment improve the quality of life, create jobs and stimulate the economy. In contrast, further fossil subsidies would fuel global warming and make future emergencies even more likely,” said WWF program manager Hanna Simons with reference to warnings from climate science.
