Earth Breaks Record, Has Shortest Day History

Jakarta

Did you know, on June 29, 2022 and Tuesday (26/7/2022) there was the fastest rate of rotation of the earth. This is hard for humans to realize, but it does give us an extra 1.59 milliseconds of the day.

Reported from detikInet, scientists discovered the fact that on June 29, 2022 the earth set a new record for the fastest time to complete one rotation, which is 1.59 milliseconds in less than 24 hours. The 50 year phase of the shorter day may begin now.

Scientists note that 2020 has the shortest 28 days since 1960. However, the shortest days in 2021 are longer than 2020, reversing the trend from the previous year.

On June 29, 2022, the Earth returned to its fastest rotation ever. Meanwhile, on July 26, 2022, a day that lasted less than 1.50 milliseconds was recorded.

If the Earth had rotated faster, it would have reached the same position a little earlier. Half a millisecond equals 10 inches or 26 centimeters at the equator. In short, GPS satellites (which had to be corrected for the effects of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity on space and time curves) would be useless.

The cause of this difference in Earth’s rotational speed is unknown, but there are many theories. Some experts say that this is due to less weight on the poles due to melting glaciers.

While others note, the liquid core of our planet’s interior moves from time to time. Seismic activity can also be another related cause. Others suspect that the movement of Earth’s geographic poles across its surface is known as the ‘Chandler wobble’.

Of course, the Earth’s faster rotation could in fact also be caused by a combination of these factors or something that cannot be predicted.

Reporting from TimeandDate.com, Dr Leonid Zotov as a researcher tries to answer several questions such as is there a possibility that the length of the day will continue to decrease. However, he predicts that 70 percent of the earth will not spin any faster.
