Fighting noise pollution: a global need
In an increasingly noisy world, there arises Silencea pioneering project based on mobile phones that aims to combat noise pollution. This initiative, which has more than 350,000 users worldwide, is based on crowdsourcing local data to feed a global noise pollution map, providing valuable information for those looking to move to a new area, open a business or simply enjoy of a quiet coffee.
A project made in Argentina with global reach
This innovative project was conceived by Thomas W. Messerer, an Argentinian who understands first-hand the effects of noise on health. «Buenos Aires is one of the noisiest cities in Latin America. I know how noise can affect health, as I grew up with a hearing-impaired father,” he shares. Silence was built upon Peaqa layer 1 blockchain designed to power DePIN, a decentralized network that uses tokens to incentivize people to collaborate. In addition, the application is present in nearly 180 countries and has rigorous privacy security measures.
Silencio’s environmental commitment
Silencio took a smartphone-centric approach, rather than setting up its own sensors. This shows «the commitment to reducing the carbon footprint»says Messerer. The choice to build on Peaq, a green blockchain, is another clear indication of this stance. «We have no scalability problems and it is profitable at the same time. “They empower projects like ours by enabling community-owned infrastructure networks.”they add from Silencio.
Silence in the Peaq ecosystem
In addition to Silencio, there are other DePINs in Peaq, such as MapMetricsan alternative to Google Maps; Wazepowered by Web3 and Roam Networkwhich allows people to earn rewards for sharing quality local mobile coverage data with telcos. The Peaq ecosystem includes 50 DePINs from 21 industries, such as AI, cybersecurity and mobility, and has more than 2,000,000 devices.
, we wanted to use technology not just to inform users but to foster a community that cares about noise levels in their surroundings. Peaq, our underlying blockchain technology, allows for decentralized data sharing and ensures the integrity of noise measurement, making it a trustworthy resource for users globally.
Introduction:
World-today-news: Good evening and welcome to our show, where we discuss the most pressing social issues affecting people all around the world. Today, we have two special guests to talk about an innovative project that aims to reduce noise pollution and make the world a quieter place. With us, we have Ana Martinez, a resident of Buenos Aires and a regular user of the Silencio app, and Thomas W. Messerer, the founder of Silencio and an environmentalist at heart. Thank you both for being here.
Thematic Section 1: The Global Hearing Index and Noise Pollution as a Global Concern
World-today-news: Ana, as a resident of Buenos Aires, what do you think about being ranked as the 10th loudest city in the world according to the Global Hearing Index? And Thomas, as an environmentalist, how important is it to tackle noise pollution as a global issue?
Ana Martinez: Well, it’s something that really bothers me. I had no idea we were such a noisy city until I discovered the Silencio app. It’s become an essential tool for me when choosing a new place to live or when I need to find a quiet spot to work. Noise pollution affects our daily lives more than we realize, and it’s great that this initiative is raising awareness about it.
Thomas W. Messerer: Absolutely! We’re glad the app is helping you find some peace and quiet, Ana. Noise pollution is not just an urban problem. It’s a global concern that affects wildlife, human health, and overall quality of life. By using technology to empower people to take action against it, we hope to make a positive impact on the planet.
Thematic Section 2: Silencio: A Global Solution Born in Argentina
World-today-news: Thomas, how did the idea for Silencio come about, and what motivated you to create it? Also, can you tell us more about Peaq, the blockchain technology that powers the app?
Thomas W. Messerer: Sure. My father’s hearing impairment inspired me to create Silencio, and I thought there must be a better way to measure and manage noise pollution. With Silencio
