JAKARTA– Stroke is often seen as a terrible scourge. Because apart from its high fatality coupled with the risk of permanent disability, stroke attacks often come suddenly without giving any ‘signals’ in the form of certain symptoms first.
However, according to neurologists, there are symptoms that often appear several days before a stroke actually occurs.
Usually, these symptoms appear in the eye area and are felt in the morning when someone just wakes up. Like what?
In some cases, a person experiences an ‘eye stroke’ some time before experiencing a stroke.
In this condition, there is a lack of blood flow to the optic nerve. Each eye has an optic nerve connected to the brain, carrying visual information from the retina to the occipital cortex area of the brain.
This part works to interpret the image into what is interpreted as vision.
Referring to the Penn Medicine page, some time before experiencing a stroke, most people experience loss of vision in one eye when they wake up in the morning.
Usually, this condition is not accompanied by any pain. In this condition, a person may experience a dark area or shadow at the top or bottom of the visual field.
Apart from that, he may also experience other symptoms in the form of increased sensitivity to light or decreased ability to see things in contrast.
“If an eye stroke is diagnosed within four hours of its occurrence, the blood clot can be removed by massaging the eye and administering medication to reduce eye pressure,” explained consultant eye surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Pearse Keane, as quoted by The Sun.
“Unfortunately, most patients do not receive specialist help for 24 hours or more, making it too late to receive treatment. “Even if vision cannot be restored, always seek medical attention after an eye stroke, as you are at higher risk of a stroke in your brain,” he concluded.
Then referring to the National Health Service (NHS), several factors that can increase the risk of stroke include:
Smoking
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Obesity
High cholesterol levels
Diabetes
Excessive alcohol intake
