‘Early voting’ begins Saturday in NYC

“I think it is the best thing they have done to give us all these options.”

Rosa is one of the voters who plans to exercise her right to vote in the election to elect the next president in the early voting centers, which will be open from this Saturday until November 1.

This is the first time that New Yorkers will be able to vote in a presidential election in the days leading up to Election Day, November 3.

New York thus joins more than 40 states in the nation that allow early voting in person.

Traditionally in NY it has been possible to vote in advance but only as a vote by mail or absentee and under a justification of why you could not vote on Election Day. The purpose now is for more voter turnout, particularly in these times of pandemic.

“We definitely have to vote … don’t be afraid, go and vote,” Rosa added.

A Columbia University medical ward is one of the voting centers that will open for nine days.

To vote early, registered voters do not have to fill out an application. Only first-time voters who registered by mail will need to carry identification.

Martha, who will vote for the first time this year, says she is somewhat afraid to go to the centers because of the health crisis.

“Yes, due to the situation of the pandemic … It is very necessary to take the rules of social distancing for prevention.”

The electoral board has said that it will do everything possible to avoid contagion of the virus.

Signs have been posted on the floor to keep them out of the way, common areas have been disinfected and everyone will be required to wear masks or else they will not be able to enter the voting center.

And they also recommend people to use hand sanitizer before and after voting.

And New Yorkers say they are in favor of the early voting process.

“Because this saves time and due to the problem of the pandemic, crowding of people is avoided,” said a neighbor.

So far across the country at least 50 million people have voted, some via early voting in person and others by mail. Unprecedented figure, which according to experts could mark a new way of how many Americans will vote in future elections.
