Bone cancer has a fairly low incidence rate, 1 percent of all cancers that occur in adults, and 5-10 percent of all cancers in children and adolescents.
Bone cancer generally occurs in the bone areas around the knee, hip and shoulder joints. But it can also occur in the spine, pelvic bones, coccyx, and even the jawbone.
This cancer often causes pathological fractures so that if a person has bone cancer, then the range of motion will be limited or even cause paralysis.

Bone Cancer Diagnosis
The first thing to do is a radiological examination and examination of PA or Anatomical Pathology. In the past, treatment was generally always done by surgery and amputation.
But over time, there is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and earlier detection accompanied by chemotherapy treatment, now the survival rate of cancer patients can reach 60-70% if the cancer spreads.
Chance of cure or prognosis of bone cancer, if it has not spread then the chance of recovery reaches 70 percent. That’s why it should be treated earlier or stage 1 and 2.
If it has reached stage 3, then the condition of the cancer has spread and the prognosis is poor.
Bone Cancer Causes and Risk Factors
according to dr. M. Hardian Basuki, Sp.OT (K), Orthopedic Specialist (Bone and Traumatology) – Reconstructive Oncology Consultant from Mayapada Hospital Surabaya (MHSB), until now the cause of bone cancer is unknown.
Some say genetic (internal) or external (due to the effects of radiotherapy) factors due to radiotherapy for other cancers. Or is it because the person concerned already had a benign tumor at a young age and then turned malignant.
“So be careful if you have a family with a benign tumor in the area mentioned earlier, there are risk factors for becoming malignant later on,” said dr. M. Hardian Basuki, Sp.OT (K).
Don’t massage someone who has just fallen over complaining of a lump. Massage actually adds to the trauma process.
“The process of falling is actually the same as the massage process,” said dr. M. Hardian Basuki, Sp.OT (K). “If it is massaged again it will add to the trauma.”
“If you fall during sports, we never suggest massage, never suggest warm compresses, always give instructions to rest, give cold compresses, don’t massage,” he said, further.
The diagnosis of bone cancer patients must be accompanied by additional examinations. The additional examinations are radiology and PA or Anatomical Pathology. Radiology (X-rays and MRI) to see the location of the existing damage. X-rays are 2 dimensional, MRI is 3 dimensional.

Prevention of Bone Cancer
Because the cause of bone cancer is unknown, we cannot determine specific prevention. And if you have risk factors such as a benign tumor lump, then you have to watch out for it.
“Do detection as early as possible to avoid the risk of serious illness, and don’t delay if you feel the symptoms above,” said dr. M. Hardian Basuki, Sp.OT (K).
