This year, in Romania, the flu season started earlier, with the total number of cases of respiratory infections exceeding 100 thousand – reports the National Institute of Public Health. According to the source, the geographical spread is extensive, with most cases of clinical flu being reported in the city of Bucharest (over 1,300) and in the counties of Brasov (380) and Iasi, Cluj, Sibiu, Prahova and Dâmboviţa, with more than 200. The number of infections acute respiratory infections, pneumonia or influenza virus cases increased by 75%, compared to the beginning of this year, also in Mehedinţi county, from where RRA correspondent Mihai Bădescu reports:
Reporter: According to reports from the Public Health Directorate, 1,380 patients arrived at family doctors’ offices for consultations and 45 were admitted to hospitals due to seasonal viruses. Of the total number, 1,086 were respiratory infections and 279 pneumonia, in 34 cases patients with lung infections were hospitalized after the disease worsened. Pneumonia also caused a death, the victim being an 84-year-old woman from the rural area of the county. Doctors also recorded 15 cases of flu, three times more than the previous report, with seven patients infected with the flu virus being hospitalized. Since the beginning of this year, 117 people have required hospitalization due to these pneumonias and respiratory infections. And in the largest hospital in Mehedinți, doctors remain alert and draw attention to the fact that there are situations where patients with severe pneumonia required admission to intensive care and mechanical ventilation. For this reason, they recommend that people with chronic diseases avoid crowds or possibly wear a protective mask when going to communities where the risk of illness is high.
