Good news comes from Corona vaccine Johnson & Johnson. Preliminary results from phase 1 and 2 clinical trials show that the Corona vaccine is well tolerated.
Quoted from CNN International, the vaccine even produced strong immune or immune responses in nearly 800 participants. This trial was followed by two age groups, 18 to 55 years and 65 years and over, to look at the safety and side effects of two different doses.
The preliminary findings from trials suggest that the vaccine actually triggers an immune response and is safe enough to move into large-scale trials. The study was posted on MedRxiv, but has not been reviewed or published in a medical journal.
The researchers found that 99 percent of the participants aged 18 to 55 in both dose groups had developed antibodies to the virus 29 days after being vaccinated. The analysis found that most of the side effects, such as fever, headache, fatigue, body aches, and pain at the injection site were mild and went away after a few days.
Some participants will receive a second shot of the vaccine as part of a trial. A vaccine called Ad26.COV2.S uses the same technology used for Johnson & Johnson’s Ebola, Zika, HIV and RSV vaccines.
Furthermore, the phase 3 trial will examine the safety and effectiveness of a single dose against a placebo for preventing symptoms of COVID-19. Johnson & Johnson said it plans to enroll 60,000 adult volunteers at more than 200 locations in the US and internationally.
“The fact that the trial will examine the efficacy of one dose of vaccine, not two doses, should speed up the results,” said Dr. Paul Stoffels, Johnson & Johnson’s chief scientific officer.
So far, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the only trial COVID-19 vaccine fase 3 in the United States testing a single-dose vaccine.
Meanwhile, Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the COVID-19 vaccination could most likely start in November or December. But he warned there could be delays, being early 2021 before things return to normal.
