Early snowfall in Alpine countries due to cold front

Large amounts of snow fell in the Alps early in the season. Last night, parts of Switzerland, Austria and Germany turned white due to the combination of a cold front and a lot of precipitation.

In some places, roads had to be cleared of snow and ice, and in parts of Austria snow was already falling at an altitude of 550 meters.

According to the Swiss KNMI, about 25 centimeters of snow fell in Montana, in the southern canton of Valais. That was a record for the time of the year, according to the institute.

The snow fell mainly on the north side of the Alps, reports Weather Plaza. Most of the snow fell above 1100 meters.
