The large amount of snow that has fallen so far has convinced at least the areas of Sölden and Sachsberg in Austria and Les 4 Vallées in France to use the lifts earlier than usual to open, reports the Dutch winter sports association. For example, the area near Sölden will open next Friday, while this is normally only at the end of the month.
Many winter sports resorts now still have about thirty centimeters to one meter, says Huizinga. There used to be more, but because it rained at the beginning of this week, a lot of the snow has already melted away. In some places there was even flooding due to the combination of rain and meltwater.
Fortunately for winter sports enthusiasts, there will be a lot more in the coming days. Tomorrow, a low pressure area will move over Belgium and Northern France in the afternoon or early evening, eventually heading towards the Alps.
“A lot of snow will fall, especially in the night leading up to Friday, and it will get colder. Then you will have a nice snow situation,” says the meteorologist. Even lower than a thousand meters, ten to fifty centimeters of snow falls.
Snow melts
There is also less positive news for ski fanatics. It will rain in many places on Sunday and temperatures will rise. “That is not nice for the snow that is there,” says Huizinga.
In all likelihood it will become colder and drier again after that. This cuts both ways, says the meteorologist. “There will be no snow, but the snow that is still there will remain.”
Not much else can be said about December. The ski areas are currently in better condition than in previous years, but that could change in December. “What we have now and what will be added on Friday is a bonus and beneficial for the slopes.”
