Early Signs of Dementia: The Warning Sign That Can Appear When Reading

Signs of dementia in the early stages can be easily ignored. But neurologists have given us a number of clues to which we should be extremely careful, especially when reading.

According to experts, being aware of the symptoms of dementia in the early stages can help us gain valuable time to intervene early.

In this context, Bernadette Mossman, dementia expert and healthcare director at Vida Healthcare, shared a warning sign that can appear in the early stages, even in people who may have vision problems but still have healthy eyes.

Specifically, this early sign of dementia can be seen when we read something.

“Another less common symptom is sudden vision loss, which can be caused by Alzheimer’s disease, a subtype of dementia. In the early stages of the disease, some may have difficulty reading small text and may also skip lines when I read,” said Mossman, according to the Express, quoted by dcmedical.ro.

The symptom is known clinically as “reduced gaze” and affects people’s ability to move their eyes normally, and the person concerned may not be fully conscious.

“This can be noticed by others because it can mean that the individual appears to be staring,” Mossman added. Additionally, the expert shared that this sign may not be as “easily” identified as signs such as memory loss and confusion.

According to the NHS, other early signs of dementia worth being aware of include:

  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty performing familiar daily tasks, such as confusion about the correct balance when shopping
  • Difficulty following a conversation or finding the right word
  • Confusion about time and place
  • Mood changes

The health service recommends seeing a GP “as soon as possible” if you are worried about memory problems or other symptoms of brain disease.
