Early reviews of ‘Joker 2: Folie à Deux’ set off alarm bells, but Venice gives it a standing ovation 11 minutes

The Joker took to the stage at the Venice Film Festival and was applauded for 11 long minutes. The applause has become a kind of meme, as the jubilation continues for longer and longer, even in productions that later fall off the stage. This is the case of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, a sequel to a film recognized by audiences, so expectations were very high. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, director Todd Phillips surprised everyone when he announced that the new installment would be a musical. However, the first reviews have already surfaced and have painted the face of the Batman villain.

The first film also had bad reviews

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ debuted with a 59/100 on Rotten Tomatoes, although at this time the score has risen to a mere 60. The curious thing about the matter is that despite the popularity of the first film, the critics were also very harsh on it. While the public recognized it with an 89/100, the feature film has a modest 69/100. Will the musical manage to reverse this situation when it is released? Will the audience like it or will it receive a dose of tomatoes in the face? Of course, the applause at the Venice Film Festival does not seem to be the ideal thermometer to measure the quality of the films.

Unlike other DC Studios productions, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ breaks away from superhero films and creates a protagonist who is anguished and destroyed by society. The viewer enters his tormented psyche and experiences first-hand the consequences of rejection, marginalization and the social pressure he suffers. Turned into a murderer and a psychopath, this interpretation of the character stands out from all the others, although elements such as histrionic laughter remain.
