Early Mammography Examinations for Women Under 40 with Family History of Cancer

KORAN GALA – Oncology expert from the Indonesian Association of Surgical Oncologists, Dr. Dr. Samuel Haryono, SpB (K) Onk, said that women under the age of 40 can undergo mammography examinations if they have a family history of cancer.

“Many are afraid. We agreed that 40 years is younger than Europe. It could be younger, 26 years, you can see the risk factors. Mammography in the sense of screening,” said Samuel in Jakarta, Saturday 21 October 2023.

Mammography is a radiological examination aimed at seeing whether or not there are abnormalities that lead to cancer in the breast area, this procedure uses X-Ray photos or X-rays.

Samuel believes that women from the age of 25 can even undergo this examination if they have risk factors for cancer, including a family history of cancer.

Apart from family history, other risk factors for breast cancer include smoking habits and exposure to cigarette smoke or second-hand smoke, adopting a poor diet, namely high fat and low fiber, and consuming foods containing preservatives or dyes.

Other risk factors for breast cancer are first menstruation at the age of less than 12 years, menopause or stopping menstruation after the age of 50 years, giving birth to the first child after the age of 35 years, never breastfeeding a child and having had breast surgery caused by a benign tumor or tumor. malignant.

Samuel suggested that women also routinely carry out breast self-examination or BSE and clinical breast examination or SADANIS as an effort to detect breast cancer early.

“It is hoped that BSE and SADANIS will increase. Then, mammography will indeed reduce the death rate,” said Samuel.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, breast cancer ranks first in terms of the highest number of cancers in Indonesia and is one of the first contributors to deaths due to cancer.***
