Early Fledging of Young Bearded Vultures in Berchtesgaden Signals Successful Reintroduction Efforts

Chronicle

Two young bearded vultures in Berchtesgaden in neighboring Bavaria fled earlier this year than ever before, according to the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association. Since 2021, these large birds have been released into the wild in the Berchtesgaden National Park in order to reintroduce them to the Eastern Alps.

Only three months after being released into the wild in a protected rock niche on a cliff, the two young bearded vultures named Sisi and Nepomuk flew for the first time – in the Klausbachtal, which connects the Bavarian town of Ramsau with Weißbach near Lofer (Pinzgau) via the Hirschbichl.

That surprised the researchers. Because bearded vultures usually only dare their maiden flight after four months, i.e. actually a month later. This went to a prepared feeding place in the immediate vicinity of their nest. The vultures will soon learn how to use the thermals elegantly.

Bearded vultures are among the largest flying birds

All of this is monitored by researchers from the Bavarian Nature Conservation Association. Nature photographers are asked to keep a good distance from the two bearded vultures. National park rangers are on duty to ensure this. Four bearded vultures have been released into the wild in Brechtesgaden in recent years – one has died, the others are on the road with transmitters. Bavaria and Recka like to stay in the Tennen and Hagen mountains, Dagmar in France and Switzerland.

Bearded vultures, with a wingspan of up to three meters, are among the largest flying birds in the world. They were wiped out in the Alps more than 100 years ago. Since the late 1980s, however, young animals born in zoos have been released back into the wild, have also been breeding for about 25 years, but have not been very successful in doing so in the Eastern Alps – hence the human-assisted resettlement. Bearded vultures feed mainly on carrion.
