Early Detection and Prevention of Cervical Cancer: Screening Guidelines and Resources

Cervical cancer screening is the periodic testing, at regular intervals, of all women in the at-risk age group (24 – 64 years) to detect precancerous lesions in the early stages, before symptoms appear. If these lesions are not treated, over time, they can develop into cervical cancer. Early treatment can save lives!

If the test is negative, it must be repeated at an interval of 5 years or as directed by the doctor. The recommended tests for the prevention or early detection of cervical cancer are the Babeș-Papanicolaou Test and the HPV Test (in screening programs, the HPV test is performed only in women over 30 years of age).

All women between the ages of 24 and 64 should have a screening test every 5 years. Even if you are pregnant, you can have a screening test. Ask your doctor for advice!

Many cancers are now considered preventable. Screening programs are organized for cervical, breast and colorectal cancer. This strategy refers to the public funding of quality-assured free tests to detect cancers. For a woman, for any citizen, it is normal to know the European Code against cancer, a code that contains a series of recommendations, more specifically 12 regarding a healthy preventive behavior against cancer. This means that the population knows the risk factors for cancer, which are multiple. Some of them are common with communicable diseases, they are factors related to nutrition, alcohol consumption, tobacco, environmental exposures, occupational exposures and so on. Every man must have the culture of his health and preventive life means, in addition to a healthy way of life, and access to some early cancer detection tests on several levels, on several locations.

If there are no symptoms, should a screening test be performed?

HPV infection begins to cause cellular changes in the cervix after a period of several years. These cellular changes are called precancerous lesions. Most women will not have any symptoms before these lesions have progressed to cervical cancer. The treatment of precancerous lesions is simple, very effective and allows the resumption of normal life in a very short time. When symptoms do occur, they are often the result of advanced, difficult-to-treat cervical cancer.

Schedule NOW for a free cervical cancer screening test! Babeş-Papanicolaou test if you are between 24-29 years old and HPV test if you are between 30-64 years old.
