In the Great Lakes area, winter has already come to a head, temperatures are widely below zero and the air flowing in from Canada is becoming increasingly pungent. Starting from Thursday, the frost will become more intense in states such as the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, but it will only be the beginning. Together with the frost we will witness the well-known American phenomenon of Lake Effect Snowi.e. the flow of the icy Canadian air on the humid lake surface which will load the clouds with snowfall, accompanied by wind storms which will give rise to the so-called blizzard.

Starting from Thursday, these phenomena will affect states such as Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and the western sectors of Pennsylvania and New York, where accumulations of up to 40-50cm are expected of powdery snow that will fall with temperatures well below zero and very low visibility. There are fears for road traffic on important highways such as 79, 81, 86 and 90, where several centimeters of snow will accumulate, making traffic very treacherous.

On several occasions the cold Canadian air will persist until early next week and it will also go further south, reaching states such as Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and the entire central-northern sector of the East Coast. From the weekend, temperatures will also go below zero in New York, where strong westerly winds will blow which will exacerbate the feeling of freezing. Freezing conditions are expected in cities like Chicagowhere over the weekend it will drop to -8°C, o in North Dakota where peaks of -22°C will be reached.
