EADaily: UN Court Rules US Illegally Frozen Iran’s Assets

The UN Court ruled illegal US freezing of part of Iran’s assets and ordered compensation. This was announced today, March 30, by an Iranian expert, RIAC expert Nikita Smagin.

Vice President of the Court Kirill Gevorgyan announced the decision:

“The United States has violated its obligations under Article 3, paragraph 1 of the Treaty of Friendship, Economic Relations and Consular Rights (between the United States and Iran) of 1955 … The United States is obliged to pay compensation to Iran for the consequences and violations of international obligations.”

The amount of compensation will be determined later.

The U.S. Supreme Court in 2016 denied Iran’s central bank the return of $2 billion of frozen Iranian assets, ruling that the amount should go to American families whose relatives were victims of the 1983 Beirut bombings and other terrorist attacks.

Iran appealed to the UN court due to the fact that the US authorities, having qualified Tehran as a “sponsor of terrorism”, seized these assets.
