According to preliminary data, the epicenter of the disaster was in Afghanistan. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the epicenter of the earthquake was located 38 kilometers southeast of the village of Jirm in the Afghan province of Badakhshan. The source lay at a depth of 191 km.
The aftershocks from it affected Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, India, Pakistan and China.
