There is a little sadness in the air, but the joy that the exhibition of the Linzer Krippenfreunde can take place despite the corona crisis is much greater. Even if everything is a little different than usual.
This year, the nativity scene exhibition has moved to an empty shop at Landstrasse 47: there is enough space for around 100 nativity scenes. The smallest of them are the size of a nutshell, as chairman Michael Thomasberger reveals.
He was particularly fond of one exhibit: the “dwarf crib” which was handcrafted over a period of six weeks. The se is now celebrating its premiere at the exhibition instead of the Grottenbahn. “The idea came to me overnight,” says Thomasberger. The model was designed so that it can be changed to suit the seasons: at Easter, a family of rabbits takes the place of the holy figures, in summer the senior dwarf can be found there.
In the corona year, the crib association is also coming up with an innovation: For the first time, a special post office with 20 special postage stamps will be held. Most of the models on it, all of which were built by club members, can also be viewed in the exhibition.
Each of them is unique, the attention to detail is particularly evident in the accessories. The chairman insists on milling every door and window fitting for his cribs himself.
From time to time the Internet is also consulted when building, for example to find out what the weather side of a shelter should really look like. “But experience comes with time,” says Thomasberger and laughs. And the 65-year-old, who was fascinated by cribs from his youth, is certainly not lacking.
Nativity scene exhibition
The nativity scene exhibition at Landstrasse 47 is open until December 19 on Mondays (3 to 7 p.m.), Fridays and Saturdays (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Some of the exhibits can also be purchased.
