EA will be developing remake of ‘Dead Space’

For the new Dead Space game, EA’s ‘Motive’ studio will now be taking notes on Capcom’s recent Resident Evil remakes. Like the Resident Evil 2 remake, expect the next Dead Space to use the original game as a strong foundation. But it should also have modern looks. And it will likely bring new game mechanics inspired by other episodes of the franchise. This is how it is, and this is how it is being said to follow the tips of “Resident Evil 2”.

EA is thus supposedly already working on a Dead Space remake, and after more than eight years of the franchise collecting dust, VentureBeat reports that EA has commissioned its Motive studio to develop a Resident Evil 2 style remake of first game in the series. According to writer Jeff Grubb, fans should expect an experience that uses the original game as a “strong foundation” but features modern visuals and gameplay tweaks introduced in later Dead Space games.

Grubb first hinted at the possibility of the series returning during an episode of the GamesBeat Decides podcast, noting that EA would announce a revival at its next Play event on July 22nd. Eurogamer and Gematsu later corroborated these claims, noting that they had heard similar information. It is also important to note that Grubb was the first person to report that EA was working on Mass Effect – Legendary Edition. And while it’s always nice to be skeptical, there have been other tempting hints that EA will resurrect Dead Space.

Earlier this week, someone noticed that the company updated the official Dead Space YouTube page following years of inactivity, now to change the channel’s profile picture. With EA Play just three weeks away, we won’t have to wait long to see if the rumors are true.

Electronic Arts will then have Star Wars: Battlefront II co-developer, Motive, working on a new Dead Space game. Eurogamer and Gematsu first reported the existence of the game, and GamesBeat was able to confirm that they had also heard of the rumor. While a new Dead Space is just around the corner, Motive is also restarting the franchise with a complete remake.

And speaking of Capcom, this is probably the main reason why a new Dead Space is coming. While EA has let its horror franchise wither, the Resident Evil series is bigger than ever. And Capcom provided an easy plan for EA to follow.

EA probably also backtracked on the idea of producing single-player adventures after the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The publisher has made statements in the recent past about shifting its focus to ‘live-service’ games. And that was part of a deliberate decision to invest less in single player experiences after poor results for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Developer DICE created Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, and this game came and went for EA.

The following year, DICE released Star Wars: Battlefront II, which was an even bigger disaster at launch. What’s more, DICE was able to turn that game into a success over time. EA will still pursue success in live-services, but now it can also turn to single-player franchises like Dead Space, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect to diversify beyond that business model.
