EA wants to put player voices in games

A patent has surfaced from EA in which the company describes how it would like to implement player voice in games. The patent dates from 2020, but seems more current than ever with the rise of generative AI.

Of course, players would first have to enter some “voice data”, which can presumably be done simply by talking into a microphone. The game then analyzes that data and can use the voice data to implement the voice of the player in question into the game. In most cases this will be to allow the player character to speak in their own voice.

In this way, players can be drawn into a game even more, especially when that game already works with custom characters. In other cases, it will remain appropriate to retain original voice acting, for example when it concerns a well-known character whose identity does not necessarily have to be shaped by the player.

Another advantage is that by using the voices of players themselves, less voice work may be required during the development of a game. However, it remains to be seen whether this will actually be the case. In many cases, the player’s own voice will simply be an option and not a replacement for the original voice work in a game.
