EA Wants Connected Battlefield Universe, Reshaping Studios

EA has Gamespot let us know that they have big plans for the Battlefield franchise and the way the different studios will work together from now on. Central to this is the creation of a ‘connected battlefield universe’, in which various projects will be connected with each other, with the player in the middle. Battlefield should grow and offer different experiences and revenue models, such as the upcoming Battlefield Mobile (2022).

The above, somewhat vague explanation, comes from Vince Zempella, one of the founders and current CEO of Respawn Entertainment. He will be the head of the entire Battlefield franchise. Halo designer Marcus Lehto has also been hired, who will set up his own studio in Seattle. This studio should focus on storytelling and deepening characters in the Battlefield universe, in collaboration with DICE and Ripple Effect. At the same time, Oskar Gabrielson, the current general manager of DICE, is looking for a ‘position elsewhere’ and is leaving EA.

Initially, work will mainly be done on more content in and around Battlefield 2042, for upcoming seasons. Lehto’s studio in Seattle will be working on expanding the story of the game, which came without a single player campaign. Meanwhile, Ripple Effect is working on a new experience for the Battlefield 2042 universe, while also continuing to support the Portal Mode they have developed.

All still a bit unclear, but these are big changes at the back anyway. It is clear that EA Battfield is preparing for the future and is far from finished with Battlefield 2042. Fortunately, because as can be read in the review from Raf, there is still a lot to improve.
