October 14, 2021 – The popular football game FIFA will probably change its name in the foreseeable future. There is unrest between its owner EA and the World Football Association, whose name is used. An enormous amount is paid for this, but FIFA finds the amount no longer high enough and so there is a rift between the two parties.
According to various media, FIFA wants to see a doubling of the already millions of euros. Currently, about a hundred million euros per year is paid for the use of the FIFA name in the game. However, the World Football Association wants to increase that to no less than one billion dollars every four years, which roughly amounts to doubling to 215 million euros per year.
EA should also limit the revenue of the popular online game Ultimate team. EA would disagree with both new regulations, which would make it want to switch to a new name after FIFA22: EA Sports FC. This saves an enormous expense, although the recognizability of the name FIFA also carries an unprecedented value.
It hasn’t been officially confirmed by EA yet, but the rumors are very strong. If EA actually chooses a different name, that is also a hefty (financial) loss for FIFA. Incidentally, even in the event of a break, contracts will continue to exist between the two organisations. This concerns, for example, the use of official team names and player names, in which FIFA also plays a role.
