New reports suggest that Electronic Arts has chosen to shelve the Project Cars and Dirt game series to focus on its second most profitable racing game.
In 2019, Codemasters purchased the Project Cars game series from Slightly Mad Studios. Codemasters itself is known for its racing series such as F1 and Dirt. The acquisition has therefore made Codemasters one of the biggest names when it comes to games specifically focused on racing with series like F1, Grid, Dirt and, after the deal, also Project Cars.
In 2021, Electronic Arts (EA) bought Codemasters and then got the rights to the racing series fleet as well. This, along with EA series like Need for Speed and Burnout, has then led the company to be an absolute behemoth when it comes to car games.
Now, however, it is claimed that EA will get rid of some of these game series. Both Project Cars and Dirt are said to have been shelved. The information comes from the Gamesindustry and Insider Gaming websites, which say EA is phasing out the two game series and moving developers to the more profitable racing games EA owns.
It remains to be seen how well these reports actually turn out to be true. However, some less active series within the same genre could be a smart move on EA’s part as a developer. Reports also state that developers working on Project Cars have been advised that they will be moved and assigned “appropriate roles” elsewhere. Something that could then mean that the most popular racing games get more developers actively working on them.
