EA announces major changes for Battlefield series

This week, EA and DICE unveiled plans to overhaul the Battlefield series in a comprehensive way. The series has now been given new management, and in the future the focus will be on expanding the Battlefield universe with more gaming experiences.

The Respawn boss takes over

As Gamespot reported Thursday, DICE chief Oskar Gabrielson has left the ship. It comes just days after the chief designer of Battlefield resigned to start a new job at another company.

In comes Vince Zampella, who takes over control of Battlefield. Zampella is known for starting both the Call of Duty studio Infinity Ward and the Titanfall studio Respawn Entertainment, and helped create the popular Portal mode for Battlefield 2042 through the Ripple Effect studio.

In connection with the overhaul at the top, EA has also announced changes for the Battlefield series. From now on, the series will be expanded to a larger and interconnected universe, with more Battlefield spread over several different “experiences”.

Exactly what the Battlefield universe will look like is currently unclear. However, Zampella has indicated that Ripple Effect is working on a new game, while another EA studio – led by Halo creator Marcus Lehto – will be given the job of building new Battlefield stories.

However, the new boss points out that work is continuing to fix Battlefield 2042. The troubled game has already received several updates since its launch, and EA promises to continue carpentry on the experience for a long time to come.
