At around 1.15 pm, the federal police decided to take the drastic measure. A report had been received from a driver who had driven under the bridge at the Vaartstraat in Ranst and, according to his own account, had seen that there was a crack in the bridge. The initial report also mentioned debris that had fallen down, which could also be confirmed later.

However, the police decided to close the E313 towards Antwerp. Traffic on the bridge itself was also blocked in both directions to ensure the safety of all road users. “The Roads and Traffic Agency sent an engineer on site for a bridge inspection and to measure the damage,” says Jana Verdegem of the federal police.
