ESA shared with IGN on the 6th the official cancellation of the event E3 2022, the biggest games fair on the planet where exclusive previews of successful games are released, among other news, due to the increase in cases of COVID-19 in the US and the digital event is no longer guaranteed until then.
“Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be in person in 2022. We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”
The event, which takes place in June, should announce in the coming months if it will actually take place digitally due to the fact that last year the E3 presented official events from companies such as Xbox / Bethesda, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Nintendo and the public reception to the digital format was negative, which affects the decision whether the event should take place in 2022.
Journalist Jason Schreier commented on his twitter the rumors about the cancellation stating that the reservations for the place where the fair would take place were canceled long before the variant Omicron to emerge.
Another important fact according to the journalist is the decision of the studios more and more to hold digital events individually, as Sony did with the PlayStation Showcase last year. Nintendo hasn’t held an E3 press conference since 2012 and Sony hasn’t attended since 2018. The pandemic has only made things more difficult for the future of E3.
