E10: Good for the environment, but also for your motorcycle? – Radar

Since October last year, almost all gas stations have been supplying E10. This is gasoline with a maximum of 10 percent bioethanol added, which is better for the environment because no bio fossil fuels are extracted from the soil. We have now been on the road for a few months with E10 petrol and Radar asked for your experience with this. Within a few days we received more than 400 responses. Not everyone is satisfied with the addition of bioethanol.

The people who are satisfied do not notice any difference while driving, but say that it is considerably more expensive. Among the people who experience complaints, the frequently heard complaints are: a less powerful engine, more frequent refueling and a faltering engine if you accelerate from a low speed.

Scooters

Especially small engines such as those in scooters have problems with the addition of ethanol to the gasoline, according to all reactions. Jack Walker has been trading in scooters all his life and he is now a lot busier. The problem is that ethanol affects plastic and rubber parts of the scooter. Car engines also sometimes experience problems.

Attract moisture

Paul Tap is a car technology teacher at Aventus Hogeschool. He says that one of the biggest disadvantages of bioethanol is that it attracts moisture. If the car does not heat up regularly, the moisture will remain in the engine oil. ‘Water has a very bad lubrication and oil is good and the combination of the two is not desirable. Then you can get the phenomenon called white sludge or mayonnaise. And if you take the oil filler cap off your engine once if it has not been hot enough, you could see a white substance on the inside. And that is the reaction of water and oil. “

CO2 reduction

There are quite a few problems but we do it for something. Bioethanol added to gasoline results in a considerable CO2 reduction. Martin Junginger is a professor of bio-economics at the University of Utrecht explains: ‘Bio-ethanol is just alcohol that we know from beer and wine. It is made from corn or wheat and we can ferment it and then you get bioethanol. If you use gasoline with bioethanol instead of gasoline, you save 7 percent in CO2 emissions. That is not enough, but given the climate interpretation it is a sensible contribution that you make. ‘

Tips:

  • Check whether your car is suitable for E10 gas www.e10check.nl
  • Warm your motorcycle regularly
  • If you have an old-timer or a car that you don’t often drive with, tank E5
  • You can have a coating applied in the tank of your scooter so that the ethanol no longer affects the tank
