Kean University in the US has set up an e-sports center — with Marshall cameras.
Kean University just outside New York has built an e-sports center.
It ultimately serves to prepare students for careers in the e-sports, broadcast or IT industry. Twelve Marshall cameras were installed there in order to integrate and improve the learning, transmission and competition experience into the course.
The system integrator Horizon AVL implemented the media technology installation of the e-sports center. In recent times, colleges and universities throughout the USA have repeatedly asked Horizon to implement projects similar to the one Kean University has now implemented.
Horizon’s customers not only wanted high-quality equipment, but also advice on the development and implementation of a holistic curriculum that prepares students for careers in the fields of e-sports and broadcast IT. As a result, the company, which designs and installs media facilities and rooms for government agencies, companies, places of worship and universities, is now also increasingly active in an area that involves bridging the gap between e-sports and academia.
Kean University’s Director of Computer and Information Services, Anthony Santora, oversaw the project through to completion.
The Kean University e-sports room is dedicated to the university e-sports team, it is used as the e-sports team’s training and competition venue, but it’s also about introducing the students to the ins and outs of the e-sports – Familiarize yourself with the sports industry and technology.
In a 6v6 setup, Horizon AVL installed twelve Marshall CV380 cameras, one at each player station, to capture a player’s POV position at a time. The recorded footage is then streamed to the team’s Twitch channel as well as the room’s LED wall, where six players from each team are shown simultaneously as a group.
“The Marshall CV380 was a game changer for us in every sense of the word,” said Joshua Kell, Chief Executive Officer at Horizon AVL. “As an integrator, we have specified Marshall for various projects for some time, so we were familiar with the high level of the camera. For this project, the CV380 provided everything we needed. In terms of form factor and quality, it really ticked all of our boxes.”
The power and flexibility of the Marshall CV380 camera make it interesting for a variety of broadcast applications. The CV380 delivers 4K (4096 x 2160), UHD (3840 x 2160) or HD (1920 x 1080) recording while remaining unobtrusive and unobtrusive, often enabling unique point-of-view recordings. The flexible CS/C lens mount offers a variety of lens options in the form of fixed focal lengths as well as flexible varifocal options to fine-tune AOV/FOV for every camera perspective.
For the Kean University Esports Center, the Horizon AVL team paired the CV380 with an 8-megapixel lens with a focal length of 3.8-16mm to set every camera angle perfectly and optimally for esports streaming.
Aside from training the esports team, the facility is also open to all other students and will be used for a number of tournaments and events over the coming months.
