Proper nutrition is an important factor in cancer patients. This applies both during and after treatment, but also during recovery, stabilization and physical well-being. Nutrition in Cancer e-learning is special setting up to help nurses answer the questions of cancer patients and their families.
E-learning Nutrition in cancer
The e-learning was developed by V&VN Oncology and IKNL, together with the patients. As experienced experts, they mainly examined the presence of satisfactory results and useful and practical information in e-learning. It is important for a nurse to detect the signals and for the patient to have the courage to talk about them.
“During and after the treatment I had all kinds of questions and uncertainties about my weight. The nurse was not open to this, while it was an important topic for me. Sometimes you just want confirmation or reassurance. Then a good conversation is enough. Nutrition must be included in the treatment. So that as a patient you don’t get lost on the Internet, but get reliable information in a safe environment, “says Anja Veens.
Nutrition in Cancer e-learning covers the following topics:
- Importance of a healthy diet as part of a healthy lifestyle in cancer.
- Importance of a healthy lifestyle in cancer.
- Reporting (the risk of developing) nutritional problems.
- Talk to the patient.
- Referring to additional (professional) specialized psychosocial care (if necessary).
Pay attention to diet and lifestyle
Ultimately, the goal is for nurses to check at each patient check-up, however limited the time may be, if there are any points that require attention in the area of nutrition and lifestyle. Following e-learning should help them with this.
“They learn what to look out for, what signs their nutritional status is deteriorating, what they can recommend and when to consult a dietician. The learning pathway makes nurses aware that nutrition has an important supportive role during and after treatment, “says Sandra Beijer, senior researcher and nutrition expert at IKNL. Nutrition in Cancer e-learning is free for V&VN Oncology members Non-members pay € 30.
This new e-learning is not the first time that the importance of proper nutrition for cancer patients has been emphasized in this way. In 2019 developed IKNL already has free e-learning to support nurses and dieticians in addressing the psychosocial consequences of eating problems in people with cancer and their loved ones.
