NEW YORK – Writer E. Jean Carroll, who will have to be paid more than $83 million by former US President Donald Trump for defaming her, said Monday that she could use the money to “restore women’s rights.”
In an interview on CNN, Carroll explained that in light of Trump’s success in “taking away women’s rights over their bodies across America” - a reference to the Supreme Court’s 2022 abortion decision, which Trump has claimed responsibility for – she could use the money to “restore” these rights.
The writer already won a trial against Trump last year in which the jury convicted the former president of defamation and sexual assault against her. So, the compensation imposed on Trump was $5 million.
On Friday, a federal jury sentenced Trump to pay $83.3 million in damages for defaming the writer in 2019, when he said he did not know her and that her accusation of sexual abuse was false.
In his interview on CNN this morning, Carroll described the former president as “a naked emperor,” and said that upon seeing him for the first time in court since the attack episode, Trump was “nothing.”
He also criticized the former president for using his defamation trial as another event in his campaign for the November presidential elections.
“A man guilty of sexual assault is using the woman he sexually abused to win votes,” the writer said.
On Friday, the former president used his social network, Truth Social, to criticize the judicial procedure, ensuring that “there is no longer justice in the United States. Our judicial system is broken and unfair.”
