Start-ups specializing in e-health raised 391 million euros in 2020, according to Mind Health. In total, 9 of them concentrate 74% of the sums collected. This is less than in 2019 when these young shoots had raised 516 million euros, very largely boosted by the operation of 150 million euros of the Doctolib nugget.
Withings in mind
Among the 48 companies listed, 5 of them exceeded the 30 million euros mark, led by the specialist in connected objects Withings, with a raise of 53 million euros announced last July. We also find the insurtech Alan with 50 million euros, Medadom (40 million), Robocath (40 million) and Owkin (39 million).
The telemedicine sector is very much present in these fundraising events with Medaviz, H4D, Biloba, Cureety … It’s not a big surprise. Indeed, this trend is largely explained by the Covid-19 pandemic, which reduced the number of appointments in medical structures to avoid contamination. Thus, during the first confinement, 100% of the health professionals questioned tested teleconsultation, according to an Odoxa survey.
Diagnostic aid is essential
The R&D sector is also very active in fundraising, with medical AI specialist Owkin who raised € 39 million or even Inato who has developed a platform for automating the search for partners in the clinical trials (14 million). The diagnostic aid sector is also doing well. Thus, the young growth Gleamer, which publishes fracture detection software, has raised 7.5 million euros.
On the other hand, the insurance sector, online appointment booking and drug traceability are still poorly represented in these fundraisers.
7.3% of the sums raised by French tech
More generally, the total amount of 391 million euros represents 7.3% of the sums raised by all French tech start-ups estimated at 5.39 billion euros by 620 companies, i.e. 7% more compared to 2019 according to the 2020 results of the EY barometer of venture capital in France.
