E-bikes can help manage diabetes | NieuwsFiets.nu
BRUSSELS (B) – It is currently National Diabetes Month in America. With approximately 37.3 million Americans – about 1 in 10 people – living with diabetes, the urgency of this disease continues to increase. Bicycle Retailer therefore reports on a study into the role that e-bikes can play in controlling diabetes.
On a larger scale, the International Diabetes Federation estimates that by 2045, 1 in 8 adults in the world will have diabetes, of which 90 percent will be Type 2 Diabetes. As scientists work to find not only more effective treatments but also ultimately a cure, a recent study found that e-bikes could be an important tool in the fight against diabetes.
There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is the result of the pancreas not producing enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not use insulin as intended, resulting in higher than normal blood sugar levels. The research, published in the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, highlighted the positive impact of e-bikes on managing diabetes. The study found that e-bikes were seen as a more manageable approach to managing diabetes compared to traditional forms of exercise or dietary changes. Participants reported more enjoyment riding e-bikes, and some found that tracking their activity through tools such as Strava or GPS watches encouraged them to e-bike more.
E-bikes in themselves are not a solution for diabetes
The appeal of e-bikes in managing diabetes has been attributed to the reduced physical effort required to cover longer distances, ride faster and manage hilly terrain compared to regular bicycles. Despite this reduced physical exertion, study results indicated that participants still achieved at least moderate intensity exercise while cycling. In addition, participants used e-bikes over longer periods of time, resulting in higher weekly total calorie burn compared to regular cycling.
It is essential to note that while e-bikes offer benefits in managing diabetes, they are not a solution in themselves. However, the availability of different e-bike models can provide people with diabetes with additional options to make physical activity more accessible and enjoyable.
As the global prevalence of diabetes continues to rise, it is essential to find alternative and enjoyable methods to promote exercise and manage the condition. The research suggests that e-bikes could be an effective tool in this endeavor, offering individuals a more engaging way to incorporate exercise into their routine.
