“Dziesmu svetki” staged in Liepāja theater / Article

“I’m very happy to work here. I feel safe during rehearsals, it’s a good feeling. I have a great ensemble – it’s nice to work with actors who are interested in the process and the work, who love people,” said Matís Budovskis .

“During the Song Festival, thousands of people can join in songs and dances that touch the hearts of thousands of others. In this story, only nine of our kind come together, and yet – opinions on what and why happens at the The Song Festival and dance can lead to both laughter and tears and hopefully nothing more tragic. And while this show will be about the Song Festival, the question is ultimately about ourselves: how do we keep our voice after singing a lot and how to agree not only in song, but also in conversation in these confusing times. Do we really always need a special reason to have a real conversation?” about future performance is said in its description.

“The Song Festival is the highest moment of Latvian folk culture, and in this performance it is important for me to understand and redefine why this festival is important to us. There is a feeling that in times of peace we begin to take over our country , people, holidays and freedom for granted, but the example of our neighbor shows us that it is a constant battle that must be waged not only on the outside, but also on the inside. Over the past three years – during the pandemic – I have felt an extreme hatred, aggression and categorical thinking, especially in the Internet environment. I am very afraid of the moment when we become categorical even in mutual relations. In this show, we will all be “locked” in one room, we will have to communicate with each other and reach a result. The ability to speak will be relevant both before and after the holiday. I wanted to create a show where there are clashes of opinions and where things are talked about face to face. We need not be afraid for someone to question our belief. If it’s true and honest, answering the doubt can only make it stronger,” added the director.

Actors Anda Albuže, Kaspars Gods, Rolands Beķeris, Sandis Pķcis, Agnese Jēkabsone, Everita Pjata-Gertner, Kaspars Kārklinņš, Anete Berķe, Gatis Maliks take part in the show.

Together with the director, the show is created by a team of young artists: set and costume designer Paulīne Kalniņa and lighting designer Niks Tsipruss.

“Niks is a lighting technician whom I met already during my studies. He lit my first show during my studies, which received the main award of the Latvian Academy of Culture theater festival “Patriarha Rudens” as the best work of Niks is a professional in his field who has worked in several theaters in Latvia, however, Paulīne is an artist with a solid backbone. theaters in Latvia. I have a lot of faith in the taste and work skills of my creative team,” the team described.

The play will be screened in the Small Hall of the Liepāja Theater in the “Lielais dzintars” concert hall, its premiere is scheduled for January 13th. It can also be seen on January 14 and 29 and February 11.
