Chloé Dygert was released with a fright after her heavy fall during Thursday’s time trial at the World Cycling Championships. The American has ‘only’ been left with a serious leg wound.
Dygert was well on her way in Italy as the defending champion – she was the fastest halfway through – when she skidded in a corner, slammed over the guardrail and fell down quite a bit.
In the hospital in Bologna it was decided not to have an operation. 23-year-old Dygert, who was conscious when she was taken away, needs to rest and is expected to make a full recovery.
“We are relieved that the fall is not as serious as it could have been. Chloé is young and a fighter. She will probably be back on the bike soon,” said Jim Miller on behalf of the American Cycling Federation.
‘Thanks for your support’
Dygert writes down Twitter: “Shortly after my fall, I was still wondering if I could win if I got back on my bike quickly. Then I looked down and saw my leg. Thanks for all your support.”
The gold in the time trial went to Anna van der Breggen, who took the rainbow jersey for the first time in her career.
She shared the stage with the Swiss Marlen Reusser (silver) and fellow countrywoman Ellen van Dijk (bronze).
