Update from May 13, 11:48 am: Munich has just been on the red alert! The DWD has issued an official severe weather warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain and hail. It says: “There are local thunderstorms coming from the west. There is heavy heavy rain with precipitation amounts between 25 l/m² and 40 l/m² per hour as well as gusts of wind with speeds of around 70 km/h (20m/s, 38kn, Bft 8) and small-grain hail.”

Update from May 13, 11:35 a.m: The weather warnings for severe thunderstorms (see previous update) have been extended until 1:30 p.m., including in Munich. In the state capital, however, there is no longer a warning of heavy rain. The warning now also applies to the district and city of Rosenheim, the districts of Traunstein, Altötting, Mühldorf am Inn, Rottal-Inn, Dingolfing-Landau, Kelheim, Starnberg, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, Donau-Ries and Ostallgäu. The same applies to the districts/cities of Landshut and Augsburg and the city of Memmingen

Update from May 13, 7:33 a.m.: Munich and the surrounding area are back in the green. Warnings for severe thunderstorms only apply in the districts of Freyung-Grafenau, Regen, Cham, Straubing-Bogen and the city of Straubing (until 8.30 a.m.).

Update from May 13, 6:20 a.m.: The German Weather Service is currently warning of severe thunderstorms in parts of Bavaria. Munich, Erding, Freising, but also Ansbach, Günzburg and Neu-Ulm are affected. The warning initially applies until 7:30 a.m. It says: “Thunderstorms are coming. There is heavy rain with precipitation amounts of around 15 l/m² per hour and gusts of wind with speeds of around 60 km/h (17m/s, 33kn, Bft 7).”

But things don’t get uncomfortable everywhere in Bavaria.

Weather in Bavaria: Thunderstorms and storms south of the Danube

Already on Thursday evening, May 12, the first thunderstorms moved across the Free State. However, these were largely limited to Swabia and the region around Ingolstadt. Here, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned of strong thunderstorms with gusts of wind around 75 km/h and rainfall of around 20 liters per square meter. It also hailed occasionally. The north remained from the storms spared.

On Friday the division into north and south remains, what that Wetter concerns, exist. While the Franconians and Upper Palatinate can enjoy an almost cloudless sky with lots of sunshine, it looks uncomfortable in the south. Showers can occur again and again in a band from Augsburg to Passau and in the direction of the Alps. “From noon, thunderstorms are more frequent, especially in the Alps and in the southern foothills,” warns the DWD. Overall it will remain warm with 22 to 23 degrees in the north. South of the Danube, the values ​​on the thermometer in the rainy foothills of the Alps climb to just under 20 degrees. Things are no different in the state capital of Munich.

Saturday starts again dry and sunny in many places. Only in the vicinity of the Alps can there be isolated showers and thunderstorms from midday. The values ​​are rising again and leveling off between 21 and 27 degrees. The sunny early summer weather will not change much until Monday.
