It was following an unexpected telegram that Antonin Dvorak, the most famous Czech composer of his time, spent two years in New York, 6,500 km from home.
Dvorak was invited to the United States in 1891 by a wealthy American, wife of the founder of the New York conservatory. She offers him the opportunity to teach there for $1,500 a year, 30 times what he earns at the Prague Conservatory. He will also lead 10 concerts across the country.
The composer did not hesitate to accept this generous offer, and arrived on September 27, 1892 in the Big Apple. He gave his first American concert on October 1 at Carnegie Hall. The public is captivated.
Dvorak travels throughout the American East Coast
Dvorak, happy in the United States, quickly became absorbed in the composition of a symphony, the famous New World Symphony. Passionate about trains, he soaks up the excitement that exists on these American railways, the noise of the big city.
