“I will grow up with us with sport in Duvenstedt” is the motto of the Duvenstedter Sportverein 1969 eV The self-confidence is good for the club in the north of Hamburg, because it has just received the Golden Star of Sport and was awarded the third winner by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier .

Rejoice in Hammerbrook

There was great jubilation in the headquarters of the Hamburger Volksbank, where Oliver Stork, first chairman of the DSV, with his 16-year-old son Philipp as well as Bernard Koessler and Syllan Bockwoldt, both from the Hamburger Sportbund, watched the award ceremony of the Golden Stars of Sports in a live stream . Also there was Rita Herbers, board member of the Hamburger Volksbank. She says: “It is remarkable how a traditional sports club has such a radiance in the village and takes on such great responsibility for its residents.”

Together with the other two finalists in the competition, they were present at the award ceremony, which, like every year, was organized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation DOSB and the Federal Association of German Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks (BVR). This year the event was broadcast live on sportschau.de. The aim of the competition is to honor popular sport and to honor the high level of voluntary commitment of thousands of people.

Much recognition from the Federal President

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was impressed at the laudatory speech: “It’s great what the sports clubs have achieved in these difficult times. The volunteers and association boards have also developed great offers for young and old in 2020 – despite or perhaps because of Corona. This creativity gives me hope for the new year. “DOSB President Alfons Hörmann focused on the special challenges of the past year:” Despite the corona pandemic and the associated restrictions, which affect the roughly 90,000 sports clubs in Germany, have made it to the finals again, ”said Hörmann.

Together with Marija Kolak, the president of BVR and ARD presenter Katrin Müller-Hohenstein, they presented the winners of the sport’s golden stars. Even if the award ceremony was only virtual this year, it was no less emotional. After all, well over 1000 clubs nationwide had applied for the Stars of Sport. 17 clubs from the 16 federal states made it onto the shortlist, of which 14 clubs took fourth place and each received prize money of 1,000 euros.

First place goes to Lower Saxony

The association IcanDo from Lower Saxony received first place for its IcanDo @ School initiative. During the corona pandemic, the association set itself the task of giving children a good feeling of closeness and distance, and with its original workshops it is targeting schools and sports clubs. In addition to the big star in gold, there is prize money of 10,000 euros.

The ZanShin Siegerland association from South Westphalia came in second. This karate club offers children prevention courses against sexual violence and wants to help them feel good about their own bodies. He thus playfully devotes himself to a big taboo topic – and received a gold star and a prize of 7,500 euros.

Oliver Stork, DSV board member: We are highly motivated

The Duvenstedt sports club is delighted about the prize money of 5,000 euros and also about a gold star. Many families with small children move to Duvenstedt, and the association gives them a home. Around 95 percent of all children of each age group will at some point become members of the DSV – and will remain so because they become trainers or volunteer in other ways. Oliver Stork, Director of the DSV, says: “This award increases our motivation even more, it is wonderful to experience such a great appreciation.”

Marija Kolak congratulated all winners: “They are all role models and deserve to be in the spotlight today. Thank you for your commitment, your determination and your passion. “
