It is also very special that they brew with glacier water. “Water is one of the basic ingredients for brewing. How the water is composed makes the difference for beers. I don’t know how the glacier water is composed, but I suspect it is ideal for brewing a specialty beer.”
What makes such an acquisition interesting for both parties? “You often see that small craft breweries hit a ceiling when growing,” Van Rafelghem explains. “If they want to grow further, collaboration with a larger brewery is one of the options.”
For Duvel Moortgat, it is mainly about expanding their portfolio, says Van Rafelghem. “Duvel Moortgat currently owns 12 breweries. This acquisition provides a nice addition to their Belgian range. It is also their first French brewery. If you look at which breweries Duvel Moortgat has chosen for acquisitions so far, you will see that It always involves targeted acquisitions. It always involves breweries that create a distinctive taste, quality beers that make Duvel Moortgat’s portfolio more varied.”
Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. The current owner of Brasserie du Mont Blanc remains a shareholder.
